A 19th century Daphne du Maurier former rectory with period coach house and annex on the edge of a pretty riverside village overlooking the Penpont valley.

Description

House

This former rectory features as the Reverend Francis Davey's dwelling in Daphne Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn. The house is a classically styled Grade 2 listed property, stone built with a stucco facade and low pitched slate roof. It has been sensitively modernised by successive owners. The ground floor contains four traditional reception rooms - morning room, dining room, drawing room and a panelled study - plus a slate roofed garden room. There is a large kitchen with bespoke solid wood painted units, fitted fridge, freezer, dishwasher and electric Everhot range incorporating both halogen and traditional hobs, three ovens and plate warmer. The kitchen leads to a slate floored boot room with adjacent pantry and a laundry room. The elegant main staircase with curved hardwood bannister rail leads to a light and spacious first floor landing with roof lantern. On this floor are 5 double bedrooms, each with an ensuite bath or shower room, and three with walk-in dressing rooms. The bathrooms have period cast iron baths.

The large basement contains the boiler room and two further rooms used as a wine cellar and for storage. There is ample space and head height to convert to media room/gym.

Coach House

The period coach house is stone built and slate roofed and has 3 bedrooms, each with en suite shower room. There is a sitting room and spacious fitted kitchen - ideal for guests or relatives. It includes a single car garage.

Annex

The annex is stone built and slate roofed. Currently used for storage, it could be adapted for use as a home office or other purposes, subject to necessary consents.

Behind the main house are two enclosed courtyards paved with granite setts quarried by Napoleonic prisoners on Dartmoor and originally laid at the Plymouth dockyard. Adjacent is the traditional stone built linhay (an open fronted barn used for storage).

The garden includes a large levelled area of lawn, bordered by azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, a magnificent coastal redwood and other specimen trees. An upper level contains a kitchen garden. The plot measures approximately 0.75 acre in total, and adjoins the churchyard. The parish church of St Nonna, known as the cathedral of the moors, features in Daphne du Maurier's Jamaica Inn and in Doc Martin and other TV and film productions.

Village

Altarnun is a traditional Cornish village with slate roofed period stone houses, and a village green adjoining the Penpont River, crossed by a 15th century stone packhorse bridge. It has a primary school, a village shop, a tea room, an art gallery and a traditional pub.

Surroundings

Altarnun is sheltered in a river valley in the lee of Bodmin moor, nestled between the East Moor and the West Moor which are both within walking distance of the house. The Rising Sun, a gastro pub set in a traditional moorland building, is a mile away. Narrow single track lanes wind between the local villages, set within high Cornish hedges that are full of wild flowers from January onwards. Situated within a few minutes' drive of the A30, Penhallow Manor is exceptional in giving easy access by road to all that Cornwall has to offer - spectacular coastal scenery, picturesque villages and both casual and fine restaurants including Nathan Outlaw 's (Port Isaac) and Rick Stein's (Padstow), as well as Exeter and the rest of Devon to the east.

Regular intercity train services operate from Exeter to London (Paddington), Manchester and Birmingham. There is also a service from Exeter via Salisbury to Waterloo to connect to the City of London and - via Eurostar - to the continent.
